At the Celtic time Broceliande was covering the whole Armorican peninsula central part from Rennes to Quintin. Only a few islands remain from this huge continent. The main part being the Paimpont forest which is still known as Broceliande. It was supposed to be one of the places for the cult of the Druids and that is why it keeps a mysterious name long after the country has been evangelised. It is still the enchanted forest in the people's imaginings.
Nowadays the forest spreads over 8 000 hectares non including 1 500 hectares of moors. The road from Les Forges to Concoret via Paimpont divides Broceliande into two parts : the Low Forest in the east and the High Forest in the west. The Low Forest is approximately from 100 to 150 metres high. Woods of oaks and beeches are predominant there. The High Forest, which contains conifers, is more picturesque and rocky an exceeds 255 metres everywhere. |
